UPDATE: I’m really sorry for the delay in finalising this fund! The Freelance Writing Awards took over my life a little and this isn’t a process I wanted to rush. I’ll be in touch with everyone later this month.

This year — with huge thanks to FWJ subscriber donations and a generous donation from a mysterious benefactor — I’m offering grants to three freelance writers. Each grant will be for £125 and one hour-long remote mentoring session with me, to be take place between now and the end of August 2021.

The pandemic hit freelancers hard last year, so I launched the fund to help writers who weren’t eligible for government funding. It feels like we’re coming out of things now — friends and family are getting vaccinations, things are opening up again — but workwise? We’re still really struggling. We’re all dealing with burnout and anxiety. Our motivation is lacking. To be honest, we’re completely wiped out. And yet we’re working harder than ever.

That’s why I wanted to run the fund again this year. To help freelance writers who have fallen through the gaps of the government’s funding, to lend a hand to freelance writers who are burned out, to support freelance writers who are having a tough time.

ENTRIES TO THE FREELANCE WRITING JOBS FUND ARE NOW CLOSED.

A couple of conditions to note before you apply:

You must be aged 18 or over.

You must be based in the UK.

The majority of your income must come from freelance writing. This can be any kind of writing, and any kind of freelancing — including being a limited company — but words must be your bread and butter.

The form is short — what you see on the screen is all you need to fill out — but it won’t save midway through, so writing your answers elsewhere and then copying them over is a good idea.

I won’t share the information given with anyone, and it’ll be stored for no longer than six months.

Applications will close at midnight (UK time) on 29th May 2021.

Everyone who applies will be contacted by 14th July 2021.

The grants will be awarded only via bank transfer by 20th July 2021.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, do email me, but also be aware that I won’t expand the application criteria under any circumstances. Don’t send your application or any further information via email, it’ll be deleted without response.

Please note: this isn’t an official fund. I’m not a charity. The money is literally coming out of my own pocket. I’m anticipating a lot of admin. Please be patient.

The grant isn’t just for newsletter subscribers — do share this page with any freelance writers in the UK who you think might benefit from the grant and mentoring scheme.
